Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, Ghana’s first female Vice President-elect, has vowed to promote inclusivity and empowerment as she prepares to take on her historic role. Speaking after the victory of her party’s presidential candidate, John Dramani Mahama, in the 2024 elections, Opoku-Agyemang emphasised that her election was not about personal achievement but about creating opportunities for others.

“I know this is a significant responsibility, and I do not intend to walk this path alone,” she said. “The NDC is an inclusive party, and we are showing this in many ways. My job is to open the door, but it does not end there. I will hold the door open so others can follow.”

Opoku-Agyemang highlighted the role of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in breaking barriers, particularly for women, and reaffirmed her commitment to ensuring that more people, especially women, can follow in her footsteps.

Reflecting on the importance of gender equality, she stressed that the nation’s development cannot be achieved by one gender alone. “This country cannot be built by half the population,” she said. “Whether in the public sphere or not, the roles we play are crucial. As the NDC, we have accepted the responsibility to facilitate this process.”

Opoku-Agyemang called on all Ghanaians to contribute towards improving the lives of those who are often marginalized or overlooked in society.
