Ghana’s Parliament has passed the Environmental Protection Bill, a key piece of legislation aimed at tackling the country’s pressing environmental challenges and promoting sustainable development.

The bill, which has been under deliberation for several months, garnered widespread support from lawmakers across the political spectrum. They underscored the critical need to safeguard Ghana’s natural resources and ensure a healthier environment for future generations.

Speaking during Thursday’s parliamentary session on January 2, 2nd Deputy Speaker Andrew Asiamah confirmed the bill’s passage, stating, “Hon. members, the Environmental Protection Bill 2024 is now read for the third time and passed.”

The new law introduces stricter regulations on industrial emissions, waste management, and deforestation. It also lays out provisions to encourage the use of renewable energy and eco-friendly practices among businesses and individuals.

The passage of the bill represents a significant step in Ghana’s efforts to protect its environment and is expected to drive the country towards a more sustainable future.
