Ghana’s poultry sector is facing a crisis and urgent reforms are needed, according to Eric Opoku, the country’s Minister-Designate for Food and Agriculture. Speaking during his vetting on 20 January, Opoku outlined the critical challenges facing the industry, including a significant gap between demand and supply, which he said threatens both food security and economic growth.

Opoku presented a plan to revitalise the sector, which he described as a priority under his leadership. One key element of the plan is the “Poultry Farm to the Table Programme,” which aims to collaborate with poultry farmers’ associations to provide financial resources that will enable farmers to expand production.

A central aim of the programme, Opoku said, is to close the gap between the supply of poultry products and rising consumer demand. He also identified the high cost of poultry feed as a major challenge and pledged to focus on making feed more affordable for farmers as part of the sector’s recovery efforts.
