The Ghana Health Service (GHS) is set to begin a mass cholera vaccination campaign in the Western Region, starting today, December 15, and running until December 19. The initiative aims to curb the spread of the disease in four municipal and metropolitan districts (MMDAs) severely affected by the outbreak.

The decision follows a significant rise in cholera cases and fatalities, particularly in the Western and Central Regions. In the Western Region alone, eight MMDAs have reported 908 cases and 10 deaths. The vaccination effort will target over 600,000 residents aged two years and older, excluding pregnant women and breastfeeding mothers, across the Shama Municipalities, Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis, Ahanta West, and Effia-Kwesimintsim.

Teams will carry out the vaccinations in a variety of locations, including churches, mosques, markets, homes, schools, and other strategic sites. These areas have been identified as key hotspots for reaching the affected populations.

This follows Ghana’s recent sub-national vaccination campaign in Awutu Senya East from November 30 to December 3, which aimed to vaccinate 150,000 people. The campaign exceeded its target, marking a successful step in the country’s fight against cholera.
