The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has expressed its approval of recent developments in the investigation of Ahmed Suale’s murder, praising the Ghana Police Service for the arrest and prosecution of a key suspect in connection with the case. The suspect, Daniel Owusu Koranteng, known as Amakye, appeared before the Madina District Court on March 19, 2025, and was remanded into police custody. His next court appearance is scheduled for April 1, 2025.
In a statement issued by the GJA’s General Secretary, Kofi Yeboah, the association described the arrest as a “significant milestone” in the pursuit of justice for Suale, who was fatally shot on January 16, 2019. The GJA also commended the leadership of the police, including Inspector-General of Police Christian Tetteh Yohuno and DCOP Lydia Yaako Donkor, Director-General of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), for their efforts to advance the investigation.
For over six years, the murder of Suale, a key member of the investigative journalism team Tiger Eye PI, remained unsolved. The GJA noted that this arrest marks the first tangible progress in the case, which has been a subject of persistent public concern. It also highlighted the significance of this breakthrough in light of Ghana’s declining standing on the World Press Freedom Index.
The association emphasized that the arrest of Koranteng is just the beginning of a long-awaited effort to bring all those responsible for Suale’s death to justice. “We hope this development will only be the start of a comprehensive search for justice for Ahmed Suale,” the statement read.
While expressing cautious optimism, the GJA underscored its commitment to closely monitoring the case. The association warned that should substantial progress not be made by the end of March 2025, it would take the matter to the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Community Court of Justice. Additionally, the GJA plans to engage with police authorities to seek updates on Suale’s case and other unresolved attacks on journalists, including the assault of Joy FM’s Latif Iddrisu.
The GJA has informed international organizations, including the Federation of African Journalists (FAJ) and the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ), about the recent arrest and ongoing prosecution. Both groups have pledged support and are prepared to escalate the case to further international platforms if necessary.
Suale, a prominent figure in Anas Aremeyaw Anas’ investigative team, was murdered in Madina, Accra, after his identity was revealed in a documentary that exposed widespread corruption in Ghana’s football industry.
