Ghana’s weather authorities warned of intensifying thunderstorms and potential flooding across the country’s southern belt, as a rain system advancing from the Gulf of Guinea spreads inland.

The Ghana Meteorological Agency said a moderate offshore storm between Benin and Togo has already generated rain-bearing clouds over southeastern Ghana, triggering localized thunderstorms and varying levels of rainfall in the Volta, Eastern and Greater Accra regions.

Forecasters expect the system to broaden its reach in the coming hours, extending across the Volta Region before moving into parts of the Central and Ashanti regions later in the day.

Officials cautioned that low-lying areas face an elevated risk of flooding as rainfall persists, and urged residents to take precautionary measures. The agency also warned that strong winds accompanying the storms could heighten the risk of damage to property and disruptions to daily activity.
