Ghana’s weather authorities warned of heightened flood risks Sunday as heavy rains and thunderstorms were set to intensify across much of the country, raising concerns for low-lying and urban areas with poor drainage.

The Ghana Meteorological Agency said in a 24-hour impact-based forecast that rainstorms already underway would spread nationwide through the day, with the heaviest activity expected in the morning hours. Officials cautioned that flash flooding was likely in vulnerable communities, particularly where drainage systems are inadequate.

“Flash floods are imminent in low-lying and flood-prone areas,” the agency said, urging residents to take precautionary measures.
Urban centers face elevated risk as short bursts of intense rainfall could overwhelm gutters and waterways, leading to flooded roads and homes. Authorities advised residents to avoid walking or driving through floodwaters and to clear drains to improve water flow.

While southern Ghana may see periods of sunshine later in the day, forecasters expect scattered thunderstorms to persist into the evening across the middle belt, transition zones and northern regions. Temperatures are projected to range from 23°C to 39°C, with the highest readings in the north.

Meteorologists also warned of strong winds, localized storms and reduced visibility that could disrupt transport and outdoor activity.
Emergency preparedness remains critical, officials said, calling on local authorities and communities to stay on alert as the rainy season gathers pace.
