Multiple wooden structures and their contents have been razed down at Agbogbloshie market in Accra after firefighters brought a major fire under control, the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has confirmed.
The blaze, which broke out on Sunday evening, November 24, 2024, was tackled by officers from the Makola and Circle fire stations. GNFS spokesperson ADO1 Alex King Nartey, providing updates via a live stream on Facebook, described the incident as a “raging fire,” with officers working to extinguish lingering “pockets of flames” primarily in the market’s refuse dump area.
Mr. Nartey highlighted significant challenges faced by the firefighters, noting that the congested nature of the market made accessibility to the scene difficult. He added that a lack of functional fire hydrants in the area further complicated their efforts, forcing firefighters to travel considerable distances to replenish their water supplies.
Despite these obstacles, the fire was contained to prevent further spread. No casualties have been reported so far, although the extent of the damage has yet to be assessed.
The cause of the fire remains unknown, and investigations are underway.
