Gov’t must act fast to prevent shutdown by IPPS – IES

The Institute for Energy Security (IES) has called on the government to urgently address a looming power crisis, as three major power plants are at risk of shutting down due to unpaid debts.

Nana Amoasi VII, Executive Director of the IES, warned that the situation could escalate if swift action is not taken to resolve a $259 million debt owed by the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).

The Independent Power Producers (IPPs), which supply a significant portion of Ghana’s electricity, have issued a stern ultimatum. Speaking to Citi Business News, Dr. Elikplim Apetorgbor, CEO of the IPPs, confirmed that unless the debt is settled, three critical power plants could go offline early next week.

“If there is no intervention before Friday, three key power plants will be off the grid by Monday,” he said. “This is a serious issue. We’ve had repeated assurances, but this time we are resolute.”

The warning comes days after President Nana Akufo-Addo inaugurated the Bridge Power Project, aimed at addressing energy shortages in the country.

In a separate interview with Citi FM, Nana Amoasi VII highlighted the gravity of the situation, urging the government to act swiftly to prevent a nationwide blackout.

“There is fear that if they [the IPPs] don’t act now, they will lose the leverage to convince the next government to settle the debts,” he said. “We strongly believe they will follow through on their warning. The government must take this seriously to avoid a power shutdown.”

This is not the first time Ghana has faced power disruptions due to disputes with independent power producers. In October, the Asogli power plant temporarily shut down over similar issues.

The government has yet to issue an official response to the IPPs’ ultimatum.
