Ghana’s Defense Minister, Dominic Nitiwul, has asserted that the government should not be held accountable for any security issues during the 2024 general elections, clarifying that the responsibility lies with the National Elections Security Task Force, led by the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare.
Speaking in Parliament on December 16, Nitiwul responded to concerns raised by the Minority over the deaths of two individuals during the election period. He stated that inquiries regarding election-related security matters should be directed at the Task Force, as government ministers and appointees were not involved in the management of election security.
“The National Elections Security Task Force, under the IGP, was in charge of maintaining order before, during, and after the elections. If there are concerns, it is the IGP and his team who should be called to explain, not government ministers,” Nitiwul said.
He also highlighted the importance of maintaining impartiality in the management of election security, stating that the Executive should not oversee security arrangements to avoid conflicts of interest. “The Executive cannot control security, as it would compromise the principle of impartiality. Any official briefing on this matter must come from the IGP and his team,” he added.
