Ghana’s new National Democratic Congress (NDC) government is set to finalise a roadmap to address a looming power crisis following an emergency meeting with key energy sector stakeholders.

Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Special Aide to the President and Member of Parliament for Abura Asebu-Kwamankese, confirmed that a technical committee has been formed, comprising representatives from all major players in Ghana’s energy sector. The committee has until the end of today (Wednesday, January 8) to present its plan outlining the necessary actions to prevent a power shortage.

Kwakye Ofosu reassured the public that the government is committed to tackling the issue and preventing disruptions for the people of Ghana.

The government is also set to secure $89.90 million to purchase liquid fuel, which is needed to maintain electricity generation during a planned maintenance shutdown by the West African Gas Pipeline Company (WAPCo). The maintenance, which will disrupt natural gas supply for nearly a month, was postponed from October 2024 to January 2025 by the previous administration.

The government has stressed the urgency of taking swift action to ensure stable power supply in the coming weeks.
