President John Dramani Mahama on Sunday pledged a fresh push on infrastructure development in the Savannah Region, outlining plans to expand education, improve transport, and boost sports facilities as part of a broader effort to stimulate economic growth.

Speaking at the 50th anniversary celebration of the Gonjaland Youth Association in Buipe, where he was the guest of honor, Mr. Mahama said the government would establish science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) schools in Tinga and Busunu and upgrade all senior high schools in the region to Category A status.
“Education is the bridge between where we are and where we aspire to be,” he said, adding that the region would see increased investment in educational infrastructure.

The president also directed the Member of Parliament for Yapei-Kusawgu, John Abdulai Jinapor, to provide a bus for Buipe Senior High School following an appeal from local traditional authorities.

In addition, Mr. Mahama reaffirmed plans to construct a sports facility in Damongo—dubbed the Savannah Sports Stadium—aimed at fostering athletic development and youth engagement.
Local leaders used the occasion to press for further action. Buipewura Abdulai Jinapor II, vice president of the National House of Chiefs, called for stronger measures against illegal mining along the Black Volta, warning of environmental risks. He also urged the government to prioritize construction of the Mpaha Junction–Debre road, currently in the procurement stage.

Alhassan Baba Darison, national president of the Gonjaland Youth Association, appealed for the creation of additional districts and the elevation of existing ones to municipal status, arguing such measures would accelerate development in the region.
