Thousands of commercial drivers are expected to stage a major protest in Accra on Tuesday over the alleged sale of land designated for lorry stations to private developers.
The demonstration, led by the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) and supported by the Concerned Drivers Association, is set to cause significant disruption across parts of the capital. Organisers say the march will culminate at the Jubilee House, where they plan to present a petition to the government.
The drivers are protesting what they describe as the encroachment on public land at the Cocoa Marketing Board (CMB) area, a key hub for commercial transport operations in Accra.
Speaking at a press conference on Monday, GPRTU Deputy Public Relations Officer Samuel Amoah said the protest is the result of long-standing concerns over the alleged repurposing of land meant for transport infrastructure.
“The continuous sale of public land to private developers is threatening the very existence of our lorry stations,” Mr Amoah said. “We are calling on the government to act swiftly to stop this trend.”
The demonstration has also drawn support from market women operating around the affected areas. Many fear the loss of the lorry stations could devastate their livelihoods, which depend on access to the transport network.
In a public appeal, the traders urged Vice-President Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang First Lady Lordina Mahama to intervene and halt the development plans.
President of the Concerned Drivers Association, William Osei, has called on all drivers to park their vehicles during the protest. If widely observed, the move could severely impact transport services and commuter movement in the city.
The unions say the protest is intended to send a clear message to both the government and private investors about the importance of preserving public infrastructure.
Government officials have yet to comment publicly on the planned demonstration.
