Greater Accra Regional Minister, Linda Akweley Ocloo, on Thursday led a high-level delegation, including security forces and the Municipal Chief Executive for Weija-Gbawe, on a tour of protected Ramsar sites as part of a renewed crackdown on illegal encroachment.
The move marks the beginning of a demolition exercise targeting unauthorized developments on ecologically sensitive wetlands, long designated for conservation under international agreements. Authorities have pointed to widespread flouting of environmental regulations in the region, fueling concerns over environmental degradation and flood risks.
One of the companies cited in the violations is Kaitec, a retailer of auto parts and home appliances, reportedly owned by a Chinese national. The firm has been summoned to court over its role in alleged encroachments.
In a dramatic scene at the Dansoman Ramsar site, a hired operator of a caterpillar machine attempted to flee the area upon spotting approaching security personnel and media crews.
He was quickly pursued and apprehended by soldiers, who ordered him to proceed with the demolition of the unauthorized structures he had been contracted to build.
Officials say the demolition initiative is part of a broader effort to restore and protect Accra’s vulnerable wetland ecosystems, which play a crucial role in the region’s environmental resilience.
