Unidentified assailants ambushed a military-escorted vehicle traveling from Kulungugu to Bawku on Tuesday, January 16. The vehicle, registered GA 4454-09, was under protection by armed forces when it came under heavy fire from the attackers. Despite the presence of military personnel, the assailants launched a sustained attack, though no casualties have been reported at this time.
Eyewitnesses described the shooting as intense, raising concerns over the continuing instability in the region. The Bawku area has been a hotspot of conflict, with frequent clashes between various factions, despite ongoing efforts to restore peace. These include the enforcement of a strict dawn-to-dusk curfew, which has done little to quell the violence.
President John Mahama visited the region on the same day, making stops in both Bawku and Nalerigu as part of a broader initiative to find a lasting resolution to the escalating tensions in the area.
