Deputy Food and Agriculture Minister-designate, John Dumelo, faced a tense moment during his vetting at the Appointments Committee on Tuesday, February 25, 2025, when Tolon MP Habib Iddrisu made a remark that has since sparked outrage online.

Mr. Iddrisu, who serves as the First Deputy Minority Whip, offered Dumelo some advice as he sought parliamentary approval for his new ministerial role. He urged the actor-turned-politician to approach his duties with seriousness, but his comment about Dumelo’s past in the movie industry raised eyebrows.

“If you go to the ministry, try to assist your minister. The ministry is vast, and you should not try to jump the gun. Also, note that when you go to the ministry, you are no longer in the movie industry. Try to be as serious as you can so that you can support your minister in succeeding,” Iddrisu said.

The comment quickly went viral, drawing backlash from netizens, many of whom took issue with his disparaging reference to the film industry. Critics are now calling for Iddrisu to issue a public apology to the creative arts sector, while others have questioned his judgment, accusing him of undermining the profession.

As the debate unfolds, many are urging political figures to be more mindful of their words and the impact they can have on the image of Ghana’s thriving movie industry.
