Ghana’s former Foreign Minister, Hannah Tetteh, has urged President-elect John Dramani Mahama to include a comprehensive overhaul of the Electoral Commission (EC) as part of his agenda to reset governance in the country.

Speaking to journalists on December 24, 2024, Tetteh, who also served as Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya West, expressed serious concerns about the EC’s conduct and called for urgent reforms to restore public trust in the institution.

Her comments come amid growing calls for the EC to strengthen its independence and accountability, particularly in light of its role in ensuring free and fair elections. Tetteh emphasized that the commission’s actions had undermined public confidence in its neutrality and objectivity.

“There has to be a significant review about what it will do differently to improve public confidence because it is currently at an all-time low,” Tetteh said, warning that failing to address these issues could harm perceptions of the EC’s competence in future elections.

She stressed that reforming the EC should be a key priority for the incoming administration as part of its broader efforts to address systemic governance challenges.
