Haruna Iddrisu, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Member of Parliament for Tamale South, has expressed confidence in President-elect John Dramani Mahama’s commitment to reducing the number of ministers to 60.
Speaking ahead of Parliament’s first sitting after the general election on December 16, Iddrisu reaffirmed that the former president’s pledge, made during his campaign, aligns with efforts to curb government waste and protect the public purse. At the launch of the NDC’s manifesto on August 24, Mahama promised to abolish ex-gratia payments and eliminate extravagance in government spending if elected.
Iddrisu described the goal of a 60-member cabinet as “very doable,” with a possible structure of 23 ministers, including 19 cabinet ministers and 16 regional ministers. He argued that this approach would ensure efficiency while saving public funds that would otherwise be spent on ministerial salaries and benefits.
“This is about preserving public resources,” Iddrisu said, adding that Mahama remains committed to his promise to streamline government operations.
