A High Court in Accra on Wednesday ordered Ghana’s Attorney-General to assume immediate control over all criminal prosecutions initiated by the Office of the Special Prosecutor, marking a significant shift in the country’s anti-corruption enforcement framework.
The ruling requires that the Attorney-General’s Department take over the cases pending formal authorization, effectively suspending the prosecutorial role of the Special Prosecutor in the interim.
In a further blow to the agency, the court declared all ongoing prosecutions brought by the Office of the Special Prosecutor null and void, halting a number of high-profile cases currently before courts nationwide.
Presiding Judge John Nyante Nyadu also awarded costs of 15,000 cedis against the Office of the Special Prosecutor, underscoring the court’s concerns over procedural issues raised in the matter.
