Former UT Bank founder and CEO, Captain Prince Kofi Amoabeng, has strongly denied allegations of misappropriating funds from the bank, calling the claims “baseless” and “illogical.” Speaking on Joy News’ PM Express Business Edition on January 16, Amoabeng addressed the accusations, which stem from an investigation by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) and subsequent charges filed by the Attorney General’s Department.

Amoabeng, who left UT Bank before the alleged incidents took place, expressed surprise when charges were brought against him. He explained that the allegations relate to money allegedly transferred from UT Bank to UT Holdings during his tenure. However, he contended that these transactions would have had clear timelines and accountability mechanisms.

“Investments typically mature within a year,” Amoabeng noted. “In the 20 months since I left, every investment should have matured. No one has complained that their money went missing.”

He further argued that no evidence has been presented linking him directly to any alleged misappropriation. “Witnesses who testified could not produce any evidence of my involvement, such as my signature or any physical proof that I moved funds,” he stated.

The case, which has been ongoing for over six years, has frustrated Amoabeng, who described the proceedings as deliberate and politically motivated. He expressed confidence that the court would ultimately see the truth.

“I know what I did, and I am extremely positive that nothing will be found against me,” Amoabeng said, asserting his innocence. He also used a poignant analogy to explain his disbelief at the accusations: “How could I steal from a bank I built? It’s like nurturing and educating a child, only for people to say the mother killed him after the child dies.”

Amoabeng also criticized what he sees as a pervasive culture of negativity in Ghana, which he believes fuels such accusations. Despite the lengthy legal battle, he remains determined to clear his name and protect the legacy of UT Bank.

“I have faith in the system, and I believe the truth will prevail,” he concluded.
