The Chairman of the Church of Pentecost, Apostle Eric Nyamekye, has played down tensions following a recent public exchange with the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Free Zones Authority, Dr Mavis Awusi.
The disagreement arose after Apostle Nyamekye raised concerns about the environmental impact of illegal mining, known locally as galamsey. Dr Awusi’s response drew criticism, prompting calls for restraint.
Speaking at a church service, Apostle Nyamekye said he held no ill feeling towards Dr Awusi and suggested the incident had increased public awareness of the church’s work.
“She has made me more popular,” he said, adding that he saw no reason to dwell on the matter.
Earlier, Chief of Staff Julius Debrah issued an apology on behalf of Dr Awusi during a thanksgiving service held at PIWC Trasacco on Sunday. He described her remarks as a “slip” and appealed for calm.
Apostle Nyamekye said that while people may hold differing views on national issues, it was important to move forward and put the matter behind them.
