Prominent Ghanaian businessman and philanthropist Ibrahim Mahama has flown a 10-year-old leukaemia patient, Lisa Laryea, to South Africa for life-saving treatment, covering the entire cost of over $110,000.
The young girl, who has been battling the severe condition, was accompanied by her mother on an emergency air ambulance early Sunday morning, November 24, 2024. The flight departed from Kotoka International Airport in Accra, with Mr Mahama personally present to ensure the process went smoothly.
Lisa’s story gained widespread attention on social media, prompting Mr Mahama to intervene. The total cost of her treatment, estimated at 2 million South African Rand, has been fully paid by the philanthropist.
Speaking to the press, Mr Mahama’s aide, Rafik Mahama, explained the urgency and logistics behind the effort. “When we learned about Lisa’s condition, we knew we had to act. Every child deserves the chance to live a full and healthy life. Our boss, Mr Ibrahim Mahama, never hesitates when it comes to saving lives,” he said.
Rafik Mahama detailed the extensive preparation required, including transporting Lisa from Ridge Hospital to the airport in the early hours of the morning. “Doctors are already on standby in South Africa. By God’s grace, we hope Lisa will return stronger,” he added.
Lisa’s mother, deeply moved by the gesture, expressed her gratitude to Mr Mahama, saying: “We never imagined someone like him would step in to help our daughter. He has given us hope, and we will forever be grateful.”
Mr Mahama’s generosity has drawn widespread praise from Ghanaians, with many lauding his commitment to improving lives. His actions, described by some as a beacon of hope, underscore the power of compassion to make a profound impact on society.
As Lisa begins her journey to recovery, her story serves as a reminder of how selfless acts can bring transformative change.
