Business mogul and philanthropist Ibrahim Mahama recently met with 13-year-old Melchizedek Adio Baafawiise, the youngest student ever admitted to Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST). The inspiring meeting took place on February 3, 2025, in Accra and brought together Melchizedek, his parents, and Mahama for a conversation about the future of education and science in Ghana.

Mahama, a strong advocate for youth empowerment and academic excellence, praised Melchizedek for his impressive achievements. The young prodigy, from Bole in the Savannah Region, scored an impressive 5 As and 3 Bs in the WASSCE at just 13 years old, securing his place at KNUST to pursue a degree in Physics.

During the meeting, Mahama went a step further by offering Melchizedek an exclusive opportunity to expand his horizons. On a flight back to Kumasi, Melchizedek was given a rare chance to visit the cockpit of one of Mahama’s private jets, offering him a close-up look at the technical workings of an aircraft—an experience that aligned perfectly with his deep interest in physics and aerospace engineering.

Melchizedek, who initially dreamed of becoming a pilot before turning his focus to physics, was visibly excited about the opportunity. “This experience strengthens my belief that understanding physics can open doors to many fields, including aerospace engineering,” he said after his cockpit tour.

In addition to the mentorship, Mahama pledged to fully fund Melchizedek’s education at KNUST and beyond, covering tuition, accommodation, and other academic expenses. This support will ensure that financial barriers do not stand in the way of his potential.

Melchizedek’s parents expressed their heartfelt thanks to Mahama for the unique opportunities provided to their son. Mahama’s unwavering support reflects his belief in nurturing young talent to shape Ghana’s future.

“Young minds like Melchizedek are the future of Ghana. It’s our responsibility to help them reach their full potential,” Mahama concluded, encouraging the young scholar to continue striving for excellence.
