Inspector General of Police (IGP), COP Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has announced a firm crackdown on illegal mining, or “galamsey,” calling it a severe threat to both national security and the environment.

At the Regional Police Commanders’ Conference, COP Yohuno highlighted the growing crisis of illegal mining, with a particular focus on the Western North region. He condemned the violent actions of armed criminals linked to these mining operations, who have carried out attacks on civilians, including forest guards, without provocation.

“This lawlessness cannot be allowed to continue,” COP Yohuno stated. The IGP underscored the urgent need for action to address both the escalating violence and the environmental destruction caused by illegal mining.

With the situation deteriorating, COP Yohuno instructed Regional Commanders to intensify efforts and adopt a unified strategy to tackle the crisis. “We are declaring war on illegal mining, and I expect every regional commander to take decisive action to bring perpetrators to justice,” he concluded.
