Inspector-General of Police Christian Tetteh Yohuno, is heading to the conflict-stricken town of Bawku following a fresh surge of violence that saw the home of Member of Parliament Mahama Ayariga allegedly set ablaze by angry youth.
The IGP is leading a high-level delegation of police operations, investigation, and intelligence officers into the Upper East Region to get a firsthand assessment of the escalating security situation.
This latest unrest comes on the heels of a deadly confrontation between local youth and police forces that left one man, Fuseini Iddrisu, dead. Five others—including a police officer and an immigration officer—were injured in the gunfire and are currently being treated.
Although a joint effort by the Ghana Police Service and the Ghana Armed Forces managed to restore calm on April 9, tensions boiled over once again the next day. Early Thursday morning, a group of furious youth reportedly attacked the MP’s home in Wiidi, a suburb of Bawku. Initial reports say the mob began by hurling stones, smashing windows and damaging parts of the building before escalating the chaos into full-blown arson.
Local sources suggest the violence was sparked by public outrage over the alleged police killing of Iddrisu.
In a Thursday statement, the Ghana Police confirmed the IGP’s visit, saying the team will “commiserate with the deceased family, visit the injured persons on admission and reach out to officers who lost their properties as a result of the violence.”

The Police Service also reaffirmed its commitment to working hand-in-hand with the Armed Forces, traditional rulers, community leaders, and other key stakeholders to restore peace and uphold the rule of law in the volatile region.
As investigations deepen and the dust slowly settles, all eyes are on Bawku—and whether calm can be restored before more lives are lost.
