Inspector General of Police Dr. Christian Tetteh Yohuno on Wednesday called on the Electoral Commission (EC) to present a definitive timeline for concluding the contentious collation of parliamentary election results in the Ablekuma North constituency—currently the only seat left unfilled following Ghana’s December 2024 general elections.
“The EC must provide the National Election Security Taskforce with a roadmap for the formalization of the collation,” Dr. Yohuno said in a statement ahead of a scheduled high-level meeting with the commission. “This is a pivotal moment.”
The vote in Ablekuma North remains unresolved amid disputes over tallying procedures, leaving residents without parliamentary representation months after the polls closed. The IGP warned that the lingering impasse could erode confidence not only in this election cycle but in Ghana’s broader electoral architecture.
“The way we handle the collation in Ablekuma North will resonate across the country,” he said. “It will set the tone, not only for this election, but also for public confidence in the years to come.”
Dr. Yohuno appealed for all stakeholders to prioritize a peaceful resolution and emphasized that restoring faith in democratic institutions is as vital as securing electoral infrastructure.
“Let us secure not just the ballot boxes but also the belief in the system,” he said. “Let us not protect just physical lives but also the spirit of democracy.”
