The Inspector General of Police (IGP), George Akuffo Dampare, has issued a strong warning to private security operatives, urging them not to interfere with the work of state security forces during the upcoming December 7 elections.

This warning comes in response to concerns over the involvement of vigilante groups, which have been linked to political figures and have contributed to violence in previous elections. Many of these groups operate as private security for politicians, raising fears of intimidation at polling stations.

Speaking during a meeting with the Association of Private Security Organizations, IGP Dampare reassured the public that state security agencies would maintain full control of election security, underscoring their commitment to ensuring peaceful and orderly elections.

“The only entity responsible for providing security is the state security forces,” Dampare stated. “We do not want any situation where voters are confused or intimidated by the presence of private security personnel or any other group that could cause apprehension.”

He further reassured voters, saying, “We want to ensure that you can cast your vote peacefully and with confidence, knowing that no one can intimidate you. We are here for you.”

Dampare also called on political parties and their candidates to trust the security measures in place, warning that attempts to provide private security would not be tolerated. “We are fully in charge of security, and no one should attempt to provide security for themselves,” he added.

The National Elections Security Taskforce also briefed the Commonwealth Observer Mission, led by former Botswana President Mokgweetsi Masisi, on the country’s preparedness for the upcoming polls.
