Donatus Akamugri Atanga, Upper East Regional Minister-Designate, has pledged to combat child marriages in the region, a persistent issue that continues to affect children under the legal marriage age of 18.

During his appearance before Parliament’s Appointments Committee on January 27, Mr. Atanga highlighted the covert nature of child marriages in the region, noting that many of these unions are conducted in secrecy to evade detection. He stressed the importance of raising awareness about the practice’s harmful effects and its legal ramifications.

To address the issue, Mr. Atanga proposed a series of community sensitization programs aimed at educating the public on the legal and social consequences of child marriage. These efforts, he explained, would focus on protecting children’s rights and reducing the incidence of underage marriages in the region.

“I am committed to working with all relevant stakeholders to bring an end to this practice,” Mr. Atanga said. “If confirmed as regional minister, I will launch awareness campaigns to educate communities on why marrying children under the age of 18 is both constitutionally and morally wrong.”

The minister-designate’s remarks reflect a broader push by the government to tackle child marriage, which remains a significant challenge in parts of Ghana, particularly in the Upper East region.
