Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, the Member of Parliament for Asawase and Minister nominee for the Interior, has committed to working towards restoring peace in Bawku, a town in the Upper East Region of Ghana that has been plagued by recurring chieftaincy-related conflicts.

During his vetting by Parliament on January 24, Muntaka outlined his plans to collaborate with the Ministries of Chieftaincy and Local Government to address the root causes of the violence and ensure long-term stability in the region.

“I am determined to assist the President in fulfilling his promise to the people of Bawku—that he will do everything possible to bring peace not only to Bawku but to other regions facing similar challenges,” Muntaka said.

Emphasizing the need for collaboration, Muntaka stressed the importance of working closely with government agencies, traditional authorities, and other stakeholders to resolve the conflict. He proposed working with the National and Regional Houses of Chiefs to establish clear lines of succession, which he believes would help prevent future disputes.

“Clear documentation of the line of succession will remove ambiguity and make it easier to resolve disagreements,” he explained.

Muntaka also called for a national dialogue on the future of chieftaincy, urging a dispassionate approach to address the issue.

“The time has come for us to hold a conference on the future of chieftaincy, where we can work together to create solutions that will bring peace to Bawku and other parts of the country facing similar challenges,” he said.

Assuring Ghanaians of his commitment, Muntaka promised that if approved as Minister, he would collaborate closely with his colleagues and traditional leaders to ensure that peace in Bawku is not only restored but maintained.

“We must work together to resolve these issues, and with dedication, I am confident that we can bring lasting peace to Bawku,” he concluded.
