Outgoing President Nana Akufo-Addo has expressed optimism that his legacy will be viewed favourably by future generations, despite his party’s defeat in the 2024 elections.

Speaking at the launch of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana’s Bicentennial Anniversary on Sunday, December 22, Akufo-Addo reflected on his time in office, citing numerous achievements in key sectors such as health, education, energy, and infrastructure.

“My government has made significant strides under God’s guidance and the support of our people,” he said. “From transformative policies in education, health, industry, agriculture, and infrastructure, to the promotion of good governance and economic development, I am confident that history will judge our performance well.”

Akufo-Addo, who will exit office on January 7, also expressed pride in his administration’s work, stating that future generations would recognise the foundation his government laid for progress and prosperity.

The president took the opportunity to commend the Presbyterian Church of Ghana for its contributions to the nation over the past 200 years, particularly its role in promoting the gospel and supporting his government.

“The impact of the gospel is not only seen in schools and hospitals but in the moral fibre of our people,” Akufo-Addo said. “Throughout my tenure, the Presbyterian Church has been a steadfast partner, praying for me, encouraging me, and supporting my vision of national transformation. For this, I am deeply grateful.”

Akufo-Addo’s comments come after his party’s candidate, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, was defeated in the 2024 elections despite running on the president’s legacy.
