Ayawaso West Wuogon MP Lydia Seyram Alhassan has denied allegations linking her to the alleged detention of a University of Ghana security guard after a series of videos shared on social media about the incident sparked controversy.
The first video, circulated on social media on November 27, showed a University of Ghana security guard claiming he had been offered rice and oil as incentives to influence his vote but stated his preference for supporting a different candidate.
Shortly after, another video surfaced, showing the same guard being escorted by his colleagues into a pickup truck, leading to speculation that he had been arrested for expressing his political opinion.
However, the incumbent MP, Lydia Alhassan reacting to the incident in a statement dated December 1, 2024, refuted the claims, which tried to link her as the person who intervened for the security guard to be “silenced.”
She described the allegations as “false and malicious propaganda” orchestrated to tarnish her reputation and undermine her long-standing commitment to the University of Ghana community.
“I have never silenced dissenting voices or based my engagements on political preferences,” she stated. “This is not only untrue but a calculated attempt to diminish my work and dedication.”
Ms Alhassan explained that her recent interactions with the university’s security team were solely focused on addressing campus safety challenges and improving working conditions for staff.
She emphasised her commitment to fostering a secure environment for students, lecturers, and workers, dismissing any claims of involvement in the security guard’s situation as baseless.
The MP reassured her constituents of her dedication to free expression and inclusivity.
She urged members of the University of Ghana community to disregard the allegations and focus on substantive issues as the December 7 elections approach.
“I stand with you, as I always have, throughout my tenure as your Member of Parliament,” she affirmed, encouraging voters to evaluate her based on her record of service and contributions to the constituency.
Ms Alhassan called for calm and urged her constituents to avoid being swayed by what she described as politically motivated distractions.
