Joyce Bawah Mogtari, Special Aide to President-Elect John Dramani Mahama, has called for the resignation of the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), Jean Mensa, following the controversial handling of the 2024 elections.

Speaking on Channel One Television, Mogtari, a key member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), criticized the current EC for being excessively partisan, which she claims undermines the integrity and credibility of the electoral process. She attributed the recent election-related violence to delays in announcing the official results and accused the EC of failing to act in a timely manner.

“I thought the EC chairperson would have resigned by now,” Mogtari said. “There’s been too much incompetence and partisanship. When the will of the people is ignored, it leads to chaos. The delays in announcing the results contributed to pockets of violence and confusion. There were also significant issues with ballot sheets being destroyed due to elementary mistakes.”

Mogtari, who is a close ally of Mahama, also stated that the next administration would prioritize comprehensive reforms of the EC to restore its credibility. “From a professional standpoint, if there were elementary breaches, she has no business being there. The EC needs a complete reset, and I hope it will be part of the constitutional reforms that President Mahama will pursue,” she added.

Mogtari further accused Jean Mensa of showing bias against the NDC and suggested that she should step down to “respect herself.” “If I were in her position, I would have resigned already,” she said.

The comments come after a contentious election in which Mahama’s NDC won decisively, despite widespread claims of mismanagement by the EC.
