Dutch-born Ghanaian defender Jeremie Frimpong has revealed that despite being approached by the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to represent the Black Stars, he ultimately chose to play for the Netherlands.

Frimpong, who is regarded as one of the top wing-backs in the world, played a key role in Bayer Leverkusen’s Bundesliga title win last season. Speaking during his first visit to Ghana, the 24-year-old explained that while the GFA had made contact with him, it was the Netherlands that showed early belief in his abilities.

“I considered playing for Ghana and the GFA did make contact with me, but Holland were always the first one to come and they were the country that believed in me,” Frimpong told 3 Sports.

Born in the Netherlands to Ghanaian parents, Frimpong moved to England at the age of seven and began his football journey with Manchester City. He has since become a vital player for the Dutch national team, earning 10 caps since his decision to represent his birth country.

Currently on holiday in Ghana, Frimpong also took the opportunity to participate in a football game in Dansoman, Accra.
