Ghana’s energy minister has ordered the head of the national grid operator to step aside as authorities investigate a fire that disrupted electricity transmission and triggered widespread outages.
John Abdulai Jinapor, Minister for Energy and Green Transition, directed the chief executive of Ghana Grid Company Limited to temporarily relinquish his duties following a blaze at the Akosombo Power Control Centre. The incident damaged critical control systems and has been linked to ongoing instability in power supply across the country.
Officials said the move is intended to allow for an independent inquiry into the cause of the fire and the extent of the damage to key infrastructure. The disruption has led to prolonged outages in several regions, intensifying pressure on the government to restore reliability to the national grid.
In a parallel development, leadership changes have been introduced within the Electricity Company of Ghana in the Ashanti Region, part of broader efforts to improve operational performance in the power distribution sector.
The developments come amid rising public concern over recurring electricity cuts that have affected households and businesses. Mr. Jinapor is expected to outline further measures to stabilize supply and address systemic challenges at a scheduled briefing on Monday.
The government said it remains committed to restoring consistent electricity service while pursuing reforms aimed at strengthening the country’s energy infrastructure.
