Former General Secretary John Boadu has been elected National Chairman of Ghana’s New Patriotic Party, strengthening his position within the opposition party as it begins preparations for the 2028 general elections.
Mr. Boadu won 2,888 votes at the NPP’s National Delegates Conference at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi on Saturday. Former Energy Minister Boakye Agyarko finished second with 2,048 votes, while former National Chairman Paul Afoko secured 490.
The election brought together more than 7,000 delegates to choose executives for nine national positions and came as the NPP seeks to reorganize its leadership following its defeat in the 2024 general election.
Mr. Boadu’s victory was helped by a last-minute alliance with Sammy Crabbe, who withdrew from the chairmanship contest as voting began and urged his supporters to back Mr. Boadu. Mr. Boadu had also ranked among the leading contenders in several surveys conducted before the vote.
Justin Frimpong Kodua retained his position as National General Secretary, winning 4,486 votes. Former Ngleshie Amanfro lawmaker Sylvester Tetteh received 1,340 votes, while Eugene Boakye Antwi and Dr. Charles Dwamena secured 162 and 126 votes, respectively.
Abanga Fuseini Yakubu was elected National Youth Organiser, defeating five other candidates with 1,550 votes. Clement Opoku Gyamfi was his closest challenger, with 631 votes. Michael Osei Boateng received 78 votes, Vera Oye Bram-Larbi 44, Chris Lloyd Nii Kwei Asamoah 46 and Alfred Kumi Ababio 25.
The new leadership will be responsible for rebuilding the NPP’s political organization and positioning the party for the 2028 presidential and parliamentary elections.
Mr. Boadu’s election also returns a familiar figure to the party’s top ranks. His experience as a former general secretary could give the new leadership a combination of institutional knowledge and organizational experience as the NPP seeks to regain political ground.
