John Dumelo, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary candidate for Ayawaso West Wuogon, has filed a criminal complaint against Lydia Seyram Alhassan, the incumbent Member of Parliament (MP) for the constituency, with the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP).

The complaint follows allegations that Alhassan distributed food to voters during the special voting event on December 2 at the Legon Police Station polling centre. The incident, which was captured on video, has raised concerns about potential voter influence and the integrity of the electoral process, as Alhassan was seen handing out food packages to individuals in line.

In her defence, Alhassan insisted that her actions were driven by compassion, claiming she simply sought to assist voters who appeared in need. Speaking on Citi FM’s Breakfast Show on December 3, she dismissed suggestions of any malicious intent.

In a Facebook post later that day, Dumelo wrote: “At about 1:00 pm this afternoon, my team filed a formal criminal complaint against Ms. Lydia Seyram Alhassan at the Office of the Special Prosecutor.”

He added that the complaint includes video evidence of actions by Alhassan that, according to Dumelo, violate electoral and criminal laws. Dumelo also claimed to have provided information regarding Alhassan’s alleged plans to influence voters during the upcoming December 7, 2024, general election.

“We expect the OSP to take immediate and decisive action to prevent Ms. Lydia Seyram Alhassan from repeating these unlawful acts and to hold her and any accomplices accountable,” Dumelo concluded.
