Ghanaian actor-turned-politician John Dumelo has responded to criticism over his transition from entertainment to politics, describing it as “disrespectful” to judge his political journey based on his acting career.

In an interview on Hitz FM’s Daybreak Hitz with Andy Dosty, Dumelo addressed the stigma surrounding his switch to politics, noting that some people disapprove of his political aspirations due to his showbiz background. The former actor, who successfully ran for the Ayawaso West Wuogon constituency as a member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), emphasized that politicians come from diverse professional backgrounds, including law, medicine, and business.

“It’s a little bit disrespectful because you have lawyers, doctors, and businessmen in Parliament,” Dumelo said. He pointed out that the core of political service is to represent constituents effectively, regardless of one’s previous career.

He further highlighted the irony that politicians often seek endorsements from entertainers during campaigns, acknowledging the influence entertainers can have. “We even had hairdressers in Parliament,” he remarked, adding that the focus should be on how well elected officials serve the people.

Dumelo won the Ayawaso West Wuogon seat in a tightly contested race against incumbent Lydia Seyram Alhassan, securing 47,560 votes to Alhassan’s 39,214.
