Juliet Yaa Asantewa Asante, convener of the Africa Cinema Summit (ACS) and CEO of the National Film Authority of Ghana, has criticized BBC News for not crediting the summit in their coverage of Idris Elba’s recent interview. The British actor headlined the 2024 Africa Cinema Summit in Accra, which gathered key figures in the African film industry.

Asante expressed disappointment, pointing out that BBC News referred to the summit as merely an “industry event in Accra,” without acknowledging the significant role of the summit and its organizers. She stated, “It’s disingenuous for a global and reputable outlet like BBC News to not give credit where it’s due.” She also noted that the summit organizers had facilitated the BBC’s interview with Elba, making the lack of recognition especially disrespectful.

She further questioned whether BBC would have been so vague if Elba had announced plans to move to the UK, saying they likely would have mentioned the country specifically instead of generalizing it as “Europe.” She concluded by saying, “We give you the biggest scoop, and you can’t even acknowledge our effort?”
