In a sudden shakeup at one of Ghana’s top medical institutions, the government has relieved Professor Otchere Addai-Mensah of his duties as Chief Executive Officer of Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH), despite his high-profile contributions to the facility’s recent transformation.
Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandor met with Prof Addai-Mensah earlier this week to deliver the news personally, while expressing appreciation for his “dedicated service” and the “critical role” he played in modernizing the hospital. A new CEO is expected to be named within days.
Prof. Addai-Mensah’s tenure, which began in 2022, was marked by ambitious reform and a high-energy push to modernize the hospital’s aging infrastructure. Most notably, he led the Heal Komfo Anokye Project (HeKAP), a renovation campaign backed by the Asantehene, which garnered national attention and significantly bolstered KATH’s capacity.
Under his leadership, the hospital expanded its dialysis unit from just two machines to more than 20, reflecting a major step forward in renal care. He also spearheaded the construction of a new pharmaceutical block and introduced sweeping retooling efforts across departments.
Despite having two years left on his contract, Prof. Addai-Mensah now steps down amid an unexpected leadership transition. The government has yet to clarify the reasons for his early exit or provide details on the incoming CEO.
With expectations high and public interest growing, all eyes are on the Ministry of Health as it prepares to name the next leader of Ghana’s second-largest teaching hospital.
