The CEO of the Ghana Chamber of Telecommunications, Dr. Kenneth Ashigbey has clarified that the previous SIM card registration process was incomplete, following an announcement by the Communications Minister-nominee, Sam Nartey George, that the government will re-register SIM cards.
Speaking to Citi FM, Dr. Ashigbey explained that while the 2022 registration exercise aimed to link SIM cards with Ghana Cards, it faced several issues, including inefficiencies and incomplete biometric data capture. He stated that the fingerprint data collected during the process was not as accurate as the National Identification Authority (NIA)’s database, which should be used as the “single point of truth.”
“We wouldn’t say it was useless, but it was incomplete,” Ashigbey said, stressing that the biometric verification phase of the process was flawed, as the data wasn’t properly compared with the NIA’s database.
Minister-nominee Sam Nartey George had criticised the earlier process during his vetting, stating that the government would implement a more streamlined, technology-driven approach to avoid long queues that characterised the initial exercise. George assured that the new SIM re-registration would be more efficient and would ensure the security of telecommunications services for Ghanaians.
Dr. Ashigbey echoed the need to address the gaps in the previous registration process, emphasizing that a more comprehensive approach is essential for the new SIM registration to be effective.
