Lawyers representing Professor Christopher Ameyaw-Akumfi, the former Chairman of the Ghana Infrastructure Investment Fund (GIIF), have strongly denied the charges that led to his recent arrest by the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB).

Prof. Ameyaw-Akumfi was taken into custody on Sunday, February 23, as part of an ongoing investigation into alleged financial misconduct related to the $2 million payment made to Africa Investor Holdings for the failed Accra Sky Train project. The arrest comes amid growing scrutiny over financial irregularities tied to the controversial project.

Speaking to the press, Ken Kuranchie, one of Ameyaw-Akumfi’s defense attorneys, firmly stated, “My client is innocent, he is absolutely innocent of all charges. We shall see what the government has to present as their case.”

Kuranchie detailed the events leading to the arrest, explaining that Ameyaw-Akumfi was initially invited for questioning by the NIB. After being taken to the NIB headquarters, he was later transferred to the Kawukudi branch where he was interrogated. Despite the detention, Kuranchie confirmed that Ameyaw-Akumfi has since been released on bail.

“The arrest concerns work he did during his time as the board chair of GIIF. Investigations are just beginning,” Kuranchie added.

As the investigation continues, Ameyaw-Akumfi’s legal team is expected to challenge the allegations, asserting that their client has done nothing wrong.
