Two Ghanaian women who were kidnapped in Nigeria after being lured with false marriage proposals have safely returned to Ghana, the police have confirmed.

Evelyn Serwaa Konadu and Anatasia Baidoo were rescued on 1 May in a joint operation involving the Ghana Police Service, the National Signals Bureau (NSB), and the Nigeria Police Force.

The women had been held by three kidnappers who demanded a ransom of GH₵500,000 (£30,000) each. Disturbing footage of the pair in captivity, showing them being physically abused, had gone viral and sparked widespread public concern.

Speaking at a press briefing on Friday, the Director General of the Criminal Investigation Department, DCOP Lydia Yaako Donkor, confirmed that the women arrived at Kotoka International Airport earlier in the day.

“Both victims are in stable condition,” she said, adding that they would receive medical attention before assisting with ongoing investigations.

The Ghana Police Service thanked its Nigerian counterparts and the NSB for their cooperation and emphasised its continued commitment to public safety.

Authorities also used the occasion to issue a strong warning about online romance scams, urging Ghanaians to be cautious when engaging with strangers online.

“There has been a worrying increase in romance scams and other forms of internet fraud,” the police said. “We advise the public not to share personal or financial details with unknown individuals online and to report suspicious behaviour promptly.”

The Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Christian Tetteh Yohuno, also extended gratitude to all officers involved in the operation.
