Special Prosecutor Kissi Agyebeng has expressed concern over Ghana’s true commitment to fighting corruption, suggesting that public resistance and contradictions indicate the nation is not fully prepared for the battle.
Speaking at the Constitution Day Public Lecture, themed “A Few Good Men: Suppressing and Repressing Corruption and State Capture in Aid of Development,” Agyebeng pointed out that while there is broad acknowledgment of the need to fight corruption, some factions are actively working against the very institution designed to lead the charge.
He highlighted that the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has faced persistent attacks and attempts to discredit its efforts, especially from those who find themselves under investigation or prosecution.
“There have been attempts to discredit the principles of the office and its officers, unjustly attended by formidable resistance and pushback,” Agyebeng said. “Though the nation collectively acknowledges the need to combat corruption, some believe the OSP is unnecessary and should be disbanded.”
Mr. Agyebeng referred to the public’s mixed reactions as a “curious cycle,” where there is backlash whether the OSP takes action or remains inactive. “It’s as if we don’t know what we want,” he noted, adding, “We must fight corruption, but we must not fight corruption. That is our state now.”
