Thousands gathered at the Jehovah Shammah Assemblies of God Church in Ashongman Estates, Accra, on Saturday, April 5, to mourn the loss of Joana Deladem Yabani, a promising student from Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), who was allegedly murdered by her boyfriend in February.
The funeral service was marked by somber reflection and heartfelt tributes as family, friends, fellow students, and dignitaries filled the church. The heavy atmosphere underscored the sorrow of a community grappling with the sudden and tragic loss of a young woman whose life was cut short far too soon.
Among those in attendance were representatives from KNUST and the Achimota Old Students Association, alongside leaders from various Assemblies of God branches and a significant presence of clergy and security officials, including Ashanti Regional Police Commander, DCOP Teye Cudjoe.
In a powerful moment during the service, the JDAY Foundation was officially launched in Joana’s honour. The foundation, which seeks to raise awareness around gender-based violence and relationship-related crimes, aims to turn Joana’s tragic story into a catalyst for broader social change, advocating for the safety and protection of others in similar situations.
Joana, a dedicated student, was found dead on February 27, 2025, near the KNUST Rehabilitation and Disability Centre. Her boyfriend, Daniel Tuffour, is currently facing trial in connection with her death, which remains shrouded in uncertainty.
Joana leaves behind her parents, Dr. John B.K. Yabani and Mrs. Rejoice Amakie Yabani, and eight siblings. A thanksgiving service to celebrate her life and legacy will take place on April 13 at the same church.
