Minister-Designate for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, has said the government will review security protocols at stadiums following a fatal incident during the February 2, 2025, Ghana Premier League match between Nsoatreman FC and Kumasi Asante Kotoko FC in Nsoatre, Bono Region.

The tragic event resulted in the death of a Kotoko supporter, sparking widespread calls for reforms to improve safety at sporting events. Adams described the incident as a stark reminder of the need for better safety measures, particularly given Ghana’s painful history with stadium disasters.

He referenced the 2001 Accra Sports Stadium tragedy, which claimed over 120 lives, and stressed that such incidents should not be allowed to happen again.

Speaking on Eyewitness News’ “Point Blank” segment on February 3, 2025, Adams outlined the government’s plans to address security gaps. “We cannot allow such incidents to continue, especially after Ghana experienced the devastating events of 24 years ago. We did not expect something like this to happen again,” he said.

Adams revealed that the government would review security arrangements for matches, focusing on intelligence gathering, and ensuring that safety measures are tailored to specific events. He also called for a thorough investigation into the adequacy of emergency response measures, questioning whether more ambulances or additional medical personnel would have made a difference in preventing the tragic outcome.

“These are issues we will look into during the investigation, and the findings will inform the actions the government takes to improve safety going forward,” Adams added.
