Maxwell Kofi Jumah, the former managing director of state-owned GIHOC Distilleries Company Limited, was granted bail on Monday in the amount of GHS500,000 (approximately $42,000), with two sureties, following his arrest over allegations of vehicle theft.
The Ghana Police Service confirmed the arrest at a press briefing led by Deputy Commissioner of Police Lydia Yaako Donkor. Mr. Jumah was taken into custody last week and appeared at the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) headquarters in Accra, where he was formally granted bail while investigations continue.
Authorities say the arrest stems from a petition filed by GIHOC Distilleries, which accused Mr. Jumah of unlawfully appropriating company vehicles following his tenure as managing director. Police officials stated that three of the allegedly misappropriated vehicles have since been recovered.
“We received a petition alleging that vehicles belonging to the company had been stolen by Mr. Maxwell Kofi Jumah,” said DCOP Donkor. “As of this afternoon, three of the said vehicles have been retrieved. Mr. Jumah remains cooperative and is assisting with ongoing investigations.”
The investigation marks a high-profile development in Ghana’s broader efforts to strengthen accountability within state-owned enterprises.
