Highlife artist Kuami Eugene has acknowledged the challenges Ghanaian musicians face in their quest for Grammy recognition. In a recent interview with Cape Coast-based Property FM, he emphasized that achieving this prestigious award will require a combination of grace, persistent hard work, and strong industry connections.
“When we talk about the Grammys, we need to recognize that we are still taking baby steps,” said Eugene, who won the 2020 TGMA Artiste of the Year. He pointed out that even basic promotion for a song often necessitates financial investment from the artists themselves. “In Ghana, promoting a song often requires the artist to pay for promo,” he explained.
Eugene expressed concern over the current state of the Ghanaian music industry, highlighting that the necessity for payment before airplay can hinder progress. “How do you expect us to move from here straight to the Grammys when people demand payment before our songs are played on the airwaves?” he asked.
He further noted that while Ghanaian artists are making strides, there is still a significant journey ahead to compete on the global stage. “Looking at our population, we are about four times or more the size of Nigeria, so it will take grace, a lot of work, and connections to win a Grammy,” he concluded.
