In the wake of the tragic death of Asante Kotoko fan Francis Frimpong Pooley, Ghana Football Association (GFA) President Kurt Okraku is calling for urgent changes to matchday safety protocols as the Ghana Premier League (GPL) prepares to resume.

The fatal stabbing occurred during Kotoko’s Week 19 match against Nsoatreman in Nsoatre, sparking outrage and widespread concerns about safety at match venues. Following the incident, the Premier League was suspended indefinitely.

Okraku, speaking to Match Commissioners at a training session focused on enhancing safety and security measures, acknowledged the growing public demand for change. “The clarion call from Ghanaians is that something has to change, and we must respond positively as a family,” he said. “We hope the Premier League will return soon, but this is part of the process of bringing back our beloved GPL.”

The GFA president underscored the responsibility of those managing the sport, emphasizing that the tragic event in Nsoatre had created an opportunity to reassess and improve football governance in Ghana. “We have the power to right the wrongs in football,” Okraku said.

Pooley’s death has led to a search for Brimah, the individual identified as responsible for the attack, though he remains at large. In the meantime, Kotoko’s first team will resume training on February 19, but the club has stated they will not participate in any official matches until justice is served.

Mr.Okraku’s calls for reform signal a determination to prevent further tragedies and ensure the safety of players and fans alike when the GPL returns.
