The Kwadaso Wood Market in Kumasi has been devastated by a fire for the second time in two weeks, with the latest blaze breaking out on the night of Sunday, January 19.
The fire caused significant damage, destroying numerous stalls and shops, and leaving traders grappling with the aftermath. Eyewitnesses described a chaotic scene as vendors rushed to salvage their goods while the flames spread rapidly through the market. The fire’s spread was fueled by the abundance of highly flammable materials, including wood, sawdust, and chemicals used in timber processing.
Emergency services were called to the scene, but the intensity of the fire made it difficult for firefighters to control the situation. The incident follows a devastating fire on January 4, which had already destroyed several sections of the market, leaving traders with considerable losses.
Following the January 4 fire, market authorities and local officials had begun plans to implement safety measures, such as installing fire hydrants, conducting regular safety inspections, and creating fire breaks within the market. However, these measures had not yet been put in place when the second fire occurred, highlighting the urgent need for effective fire safety protocols in the area.
The series of fires has left the community concerned about the future of the market and the livelihoods of the traders who depend on it.
