The President of the Arts and Tourism Writers Association, George Quaye, has criticized the stagnation of Ghana’s arts and tourism sector, attributing its struggles to a lack of strategic vision among those overseeing the industry.

In an interview on the Citi Breakfast Show on Tuesday, December 24, Quaye called for a more forward-thinking approach to reviving the sector. He expressed concern that political parties have consistently overlooked arts and tourism in their manifestos, focusing instead on sectors such as agriculture, education, and the economy.

Quaye highlighted key challenges, including inadequate infrastructure and poor communication, which he believes stem from a failure to recognize the tourism industry’s potential for national development.

He urged political parties to prioritise arts and tourism in their platforms, advocating for investments in infrastructure, marketing, and capacity building to unlock the sector’s full potential.

“Tourist sites like the Cape Coast Castle lack basic signage and marketing,” Quaye pointed out. “This reflects a lack of vision, and someone needs to take action on this.”

His remarks come as calls grow for a more comprehensive strategy to leverage Ghana’s cultural and natural resources, with the goal of transforming tourism into a key pillar of the national economy.
